Doctorate with Siemens

With the local support of evoline, the Rail Automation business unit of Siemens is offering four full scholarships to complete a three-year-doctorate conducted in the premises of UNIVERSITATEA TECHNICA (UT) and UNIVERSITATEA BABES-BOLYAI (UBB) of Cluj Napoca, starting with autumn 2013.


The PhD program has two main objectives: on one hand to contribute to the scientific and economic development of the region, on the other hand to raise the educational competitiveness of the technology faculties of universities in Cluj Napoca.

Beside the doctorate scholarships, the Siemens program is supporting those local professors, too, who will guide the studies. In this way, the acquired knowledge during the researches will remain in the intellectual ownership of the universities.


The doctorate theses are offered in the fields of Computer Science and Automation. The research topics provided by Siemens are in line with the challenges of the industry and they try to find solutions for them.

Proposals for the Automation and IT Faculty of the UT:

In today’s safety-critical software, e.g. railway automation, one of the main challenges is represented by the integration of different tablets and low-budget drones. Safety, reliability and maintenance are all quality related and non-functional requirements which are essential in integrating these devices into pre-existing safety-critical systems (solutions).

  • Integration of tablets in the pre-existing safety-critical systems – architecture, solutions using SaaS; certification concepts.
  • Integration of drones in the pre-existing safety-critical systems – architecture, solutions using SaaS; certification concepts.

Proposals for the Mathematics and Computer Science Faculty of the UBB:

Code writing and verification are two main phases of today’s software development life cycle which are imposing challenges in reliability and economical aspects as well.

Modeling activities, with their formal and semi-formal methods, represent potential answer to these challenges.

  • Model based software validation


Applications can be submitted by graduates with a master’s or similar academic degree in the fields of Information Technology, Automation or related domains.


For a three-year period, scholarship holders will receive competitive allocations, traveling expense allowances and some additional costs will be covered as well.

The PhD students will be able to work and research in an international environment and share their experience with other specialists involved in similar projects.
